"Posticum"1997 8"x6"x3" Mixed Media Construction: music box, acrylic fur, wire mesh, newspaper text and glass. Denmark was planning a country-wide celebration of the human mind, Year of the Brain (HjernetAret), an event that would include, in August 1997, a conference called "The Brain and Self", a collaboration between HjernetAret and Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona. It was important that the exhibit reflect the international spirit of this collaborative event. Artists were invited to submit works that addressed the themes of mind, brain and self, and human consciousness. Solutions included experimental 3-dimensional works demanding a live encounter with the object, such as magical sculptural pieces, containing a wind-up music box...Looking to the years ahead, the questions still facing science are those that have teased human thought since the dawn of history: What is life? What is mind? What is nature of human experience? To answer such questions, many believe the purview of science must be expanded beyond its present mechanistic confines. New metaphors are needed. Perhaps the song might serve as a metaphor for the next. Imagine individual notes harmonically engaged, resonating with the singer's syllables, forming phrases of poetry, mixed with melody, and building toward the broad emotional significance of the piece. Where, in this hierarchy of interactions is the "physical substrate" of the song? Does not its essence emerge from all levels of its immensely intricate structure. Can one not in similar terms characterize the life of an organism and the mind of a brain? What is true song holds well for many works of art. A dance is a song in movement and a painting is a song in color and form. As you explore catalogue, consider how that effort might enhance your own understanding of life, mind and the human experience. Images selected for awards were chosen based on the quality of the original object or image, and on their content or idea relevant to the theme of the exhibit. 200 entries were received for this exhibit. 12 countries were represented, including entries from 22 states in the USA.
