Being a Turkish/American artist, Banna manipulates many superstitious ideas in her works. The work titled “heal me now x 41”; a composition of forty-one door locks composed of wood planks joined together with iron pins and decorated with the ingredients of “Mesir Macunu” a sticky imperial elixir (power gum). Mesir Macunu is made of 41 spices that reputedly cured the Suleyman the Magnificent’s ailing mother and is still being used as a healer by many people in Anatolia. The number 41 holds a mystical significance to Turks. The successful completion of certain events is commonly marked by saying a special phrase 41 times. Banna’s locks remind us of heavy and dense doors, behind which we hide our thoughts, worries, fears and weaknesses, all being a part of who we are. Repeating the special phrase “heal me” combined with the ingredients of the imperial elixir is a wish for the human race to heal their wounds.
